Our tug of war match was a draw. We gave up after about fifteen minutes of back-and-forth and decided to set up a rematch for the next night.
While Noah ran to play with the other kids whoâd set up their own tug of war, I dropped my hair from its ponytail and gathered it back up to include the strands that escaped.
Garek teased one strand, tucking it behind my ear while I secured the rest. âYour hair is beautiful. Like flames and the prettiest setting sun.â
This guy might be a gruff warlord, but he had a way with words.
He was slowly inching into my heart and taking over. Did I dare let him fully inside?
âThank you,â I said. I boldly tugged on a lavender band of his hair. âYour hair is gorgeous. As black as night yet with purple highlights. Back on Earth, women dyed their hair various colors but never anything like this. I like it.â
He beamed. âThank you. This color is said to represent our ancestors while the black our future. A nice mix of both.â
âIt is.â
Unsettled by his nearness and our new closeness, I scooted around him, looking for something tangible to distract me. A stream trickled along one side of the clearing, and I grabbed Noah and my bowls off the ground. When in doubt, do housework.
I should be safe at the stream. My gaze scanned the woods but other than the occasional swoop of a trundier overhead, I heard nothing I deemed threatening. I saw nothing eager to jump out and bite me, but who knew? This was an amazing world, but it was full of danger.
âLet me help,â Garek said from beside me, taking the bowls I collected.
âYou do dishes?â I asked. âIf you can cook, Iâm going to propose.â Bold of me, but I couldnât help it. This guy brought out the woman I used to be before I was scared to be noticed.
âPropose what?â
He kept flashing his tusks. Whichâ¦could be considered a tad creepy. Why did I find it sexy?
Because I wanted him. No use denying that. Wanting didnât have to mean anything, did it? He wanted me earlier, when he had a hard-on while flying on Veskar, but it wasnât like we were sneaking off to rut in the dark.
Shit. I wanted to rut in the dark. Warmth pooled between my legs and I tried to shrug it off. Useless. My brain had been teasing my body all day with memories of him emerging from the water, a vision in burnished gold. And his cockâ¦
âProposing isâ¦offering someone a serious relationship,â I quipped. I was so brazen; youâd think I drank alcohol. What did they put in that soup?
The plates on his face softened. âIs that what you are doing?â
Well, um⦠Was I?
Suddenly shy, I scooted around him and gathered more bowls. âTime to head to the stream.â
âPiper,â he said softly as he joined me on the narrow trail weaving through tall, blue grass. Their seedpods whispered together, nudged into each other by the wind.
